Bethany knows that she is special. She doesn't learn things as easily as her classmates do and that sometimes makes them mean to her. They call her names - including the really "bad" name. Even her mom and her sister Mira say unkind things at times. But Bethany has friends like her neighbor Mrs. Goldsborough as well as happy times with Dad when he gets home from work. And now, Mira has promised to protect her from the bullies when the new school year begins.

Then tragedy strikes, tearing Bethany's world apart in ways she could never have imagined, and she starts to wonder if there will ever be a place that feels like home again.

Award-winning author Valerie Sherrard revisits the world of The Glory Wind in her new historical novel.

personally I did not like this book. To me was a very depressing story, and really sad for a group of grade 5-6 kids

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING. Even though it was really sad, it reflected how life is sometimes. It had strong characters and good events.

Rain Shadow is very well thought out and in depth book. It does get a bit sad but that's what I think makes it such a great read.

  6. I LOVED this book. I found it so sad, but inspiring. I could totally feel how confused, scared and sad Bethany felt when her mother told her why she was mad, or when she had to get sent away. Also, this book and Bethany showed me, how if you put the effort in and work hard, you can persevere. This book also reminds me of another book from last year: "the Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden", because it was realistic, and told you about problems children face every day, and how they persevere. I recommend it to people who like sweet, but sad realistic fiction.

  7. BEST.BOOK.EVER.
it was really depressing but you thought as if you were her, and going through the same things. it was really painful, and that is a good thing; it pushed you to keep reading. The whole time I wanted to go over and yell at the mom "woah there, back off" and telling Bethany "TELL.YOUR.DAD". Valerie Sherrard you rock!!
every body should read this book!!!!!!!

This book was sooooooooooooooooooooo sad! It's about a girl named Bethany who doesn't fit in and has difficulties. Then something terrible happens in her family and her mom is never the same. It's really sad, but also an amazing book. Bethany always somehow perseveres no matter how bad things get. READ RAIN SHADOW!!!!!!!!!

This is the best book I have read in silver birch so far. This book makes you feel Betany's pain, Rain Shadow is about a girl named betany and she has some dificulties, there family goes through a terrible tragedy and starts to fall apart. The author made me visualize what was happening and feel her heart ache. But through the the book Bethany learns to do things without her difficulties getting in the way. This book is an amazing read and inspirational experience, I think it would make a great movie. Valerie you did an amazing job.

    BEST BOOK EVER!!!
I liked how this book went right into the story when there neighbor broke her leg, and as I was reading this book I could feel how Bethany was feeling. I'm also glad that Bethany found what she was good at. In the book it helped when it explained/repeated what Rain shadow means so I can under stand the book more clearly.

I did not like this book. It was uninteresting and I could not connect with the characters. I wish there was more action.

I loved this book because the story is kind of like what happens to people in real life sometimes, and it was quite well developed.

The book was very sad, but I really liked the plot and the development of the story. Also the characters were very interesting even though in the book, they tried to make the characters uninteresting.
