Non Fiction: Glow in the Dark Creatures

Book: Glow in the Dark Creatures
Author: Natalie Hyde
Link: coming soon...

Glow-in-the-dark creatures possess one of the most amazing abilities in our world. Using only chemicals in their bodies, they can create bioluminescence, or "living light." The lights they produce come in an astonishing variety of colours and patterns. Glow-in-the-dark creatures use their light displays to hide from enemies, to cry for help, to warn of danger or to find a mate. It is a beautiful silent language.

From fireflies and glowworms to flashlight fish and velvet belly lantern sharks, the diversity and number of creatures who are bioluminescent have surprised scientists. They have found bioluminescent creatures who flit across the night sky, creep along the shadowy ground, float in moonless oceans and swim in the deepest, darkest parts of the sea.

• Find out which land and sea creatures make light.
• Discover why bioluminescence is so important in nature.
• Examine the chemical process that occurs to make creatures glow.
• Learn why different creatures create different colours.
• Discover how scientists are harnessing the powers of bioluminescence for human uses.
• Make glow-in-the-dark slime, create a firefly-squid necklace and learn how to catch fireflies.

This book was literally all about bioluminescence. It had a good layout and attractive pictures and facts, but it got a little boring after a while because it sometimes went over the same concepts again.

This was an good but not awesome non fiction read. It was really informing, but some of the pictures were creepy and it was really repetitive.

  3. This book was actually really good. At first, I was scared to read it, because I'm very afraid of bugs, but when I read it, I found that it was actually very informative, but not boring, which is a very hard balance to find in a non-fiction book. I think that this book is pretty good, but I think that it was a bit repetitive.

  4. This book was suprisingly enjoyable, I was not really that happy to read it in the begginning but now that I am done I really enjoyed it. It was very informative and the author added a cool twist by putting some things you can make at home so you can clear your understanding of bioluminescence. The layout was also really effective because everything was done in vibrant colours that ketch your attention. Over all this book was great and I would like to read some more about bioluminescence.

This book was a good read. It was very informative and there were some cool activities but was repetitive. It talked a lot about creatures and bugs that have bioluminescence and how it helps them survive and mate.
